Licence Requirements
(standard car licence )
Very few large and properly constructed motorhomes are either safe, or legal to drive on a car licence. Some manufacturers will allow less then 400kg below the maximum gross weight to just creep in under the weight.
You then have to add the driver and passengers weights as well as 100kgs plus of fuel..... 150kgs of fresh water, luggage, bikes, accessories, etc, etc....
Easy to see how so many owners end up in an illegal situation that the road traffic authorities and police know only too well utilising their numerous fixed and mobile automatic weighbridge cameras for easy fines around the country.
Also bear in mind that towing capacity is limited when you approach the GVM of the tow vehicle.
As soon as you exceed the GVM of a vehicle, your driving licence is invalid, your insurance void as well as any roadside assist you may have.
(light truck licence)
For peace of mind, you can easily see why some quality motorhomes models are best driven on utilising a light rigid truck licence or above.
This can be obtained in just a one day at a fixed cost, upgrade course, via your local driver training company.
This not only gives you a huge amount of extra payload (up to 2500kgs), but also increases the tow capacity.
All the illegalities, and fine risks are gone and you're properly and legally insured for both road risks and roadside assist.
It's also a great way to get safe training in driving a larger vehicle, if you new to motorhomes, or just would like a refresher.
This is the preferred way to go for a trouble free and relaxed motorhome experience.
